Shock Treatment
--------------------
Movie - Mumbai Police
03/05/13 @ Cinemax. Kochi
Review
---------
Director Roshan Andrews's new movie 'Mumbai Police' is a shock treatment in itself. Something that will stay with you once you have come out of the theater. But for most, the reason would be the 'questionable believability' of its characters and 'acceptance factor'. The tryst of writing the review for this movie is tough, because it can seriously give away the 'twist' in the more or less attempt at making an intriguing murder mystery.
Obviously, Bobby - Sanjay (the writer duo) have put in lot of thought in making this investigation movie to be put in a 'new zone' in malayalam. A police officer (Antony Mosses) who looses memory in an accident, moments after he has found the truth about his most interesting case to date. And him starting again from scratch, to go on the trail once again. The premise is interesting to say the least. The movie begins well with a well paced approach. Most of the time you feel a bit confused as the main protagonist himself. But the flow and interest is nice, so you may go along the movie. Discovering the friendship angle towards the later part of the first half, the movie has some warm moments as well. By interval the feel is above average overall.
Post interval the movie tries to keep its chin up. The same pattern follows with some average, inconsequential scenes and some good ones. So all is geared up for the climax and it completely 'shakes and shocks' you. Probably it erases much of the story track that you have seen until then. The issue lies in the fact that perhaps what only remains is the climax twist and stands out as a seperate entity from the whole movie. The believability, acceptance and unbecoming factor of it, all leads to a 'numb' feeling. In that sense it quickly reminds you of the Bollywood movie 'Talaash' and its effect on the viewer.
Prithviraj as 'Antony Mosses' is impressive. Its quite a treat to watch the nuances he has added to the performance from being lost, to being macho, to a friend, to dabble along the investigation trail looking clueless, to a being a rough police officer in every inch. For whatever the movie is, he deserves kudos for the attempt. Jayasurya as 'Aryan' is impressive. As a noble friend in need, he thrives in this role. Rehman is also a good presence. More about the cast cant be disucssed as it may lead to a spoiler.
Script by Bobby-Sanjay is good with clear and strong intention of an experiement. But sad to say that it could not be made 'acceptable'. Roshan directs the movie decently. It keeps your interest going more or less. Gopi Sundar has done good work with the music. He lifts the mood many a times. Editing is good in many scenes but overall the movie needs trimming by a good 15-20 minutes. Cinematography is average.
Overall, 'Mumbai Police' invites the viewer to come test your brains and wits in one of the most compelling genres to make a movie in malayalam - a murder mystery. And takes a very bold and experiemental twist as the crux. But its sad that the very same thing becomes hard to digest, believable and hits at the very core on which the movie was build on - Friendship.
Verdict - Shock Value
Rating - 2.5/5**
**Rating edited after a second watch, due to the unique nature of the movie. The change in rating is more for personal records than anything else what so ever.
