Movie - ABCD - American Born Confused Desi

    Review
    ---------

Some Americans believe that a trip to India is a good way to feel the calm inside. Get lost in the madding crowd and rediscover yourself. Director Martin Prakatt's new movie 'ABCD' (American Born Confused Desi) does not go the whole distance with the above thought but touches it superficially. It tries to create a heady mix adding entertainment and social issues. How much it succeeds is quite a relative question but does not surely do bad at it.

John (Dulquer Salmaan) and Kora (Gregory) are 2 spoilt American youths with Indian lineage. The movie starts showing some silly and forgettable acts of theirs to establish the same. The first 15-20 mins just depend on the lead actor's good looks and the Manhattan Skyline. Things really start to get in line once John and Kora arrive in Inda for a trip. Their tryst with the Indian ways create many instances for fun and jokes. Their discovery that they have been 'trapped' in India and coming to terms with life here, makes the best portions of the movie. Their limited life style, the 'gastric problem' episode and lift to college all add to the fun. The jokes are a tad more decent here, even though toilet humor and double meaning dialogues continue its show. As the interval arrives after an hour 20-25 mins, the feel is Good - Above average.

The second half is where the intention was to kick in the social issues angle but here the pace seriously goes down. Jokes are just few during the proceedings. But most of the times, it can keep you engaged. There are some points also that you may think this is going over board or going on winding lethargically without an end. Even after an hour and 15 mins, the film has no intention of going for a close. The climax which seem to be arriving gives quite a fizzled out feeling and the end dialogues at airport add no much character. The finale once again in the US does not add anything much.

Dulquer Salmaan does his role decently well. More importantly he looks, speaks and behaves like an ABCD. He has good screen presence as well. Gregory rocks the show as 'Kora'. His one liners bring the house down many a times. Aparna as the leading lady has quite the same expressions throughout. Rest of the cast has nothing much to add but do ok. Direction by Martin Prakatt is decent but could not add a knock out punch where it was needed most. Jomon's visuals are eye candy. Gopi Sundar's back ground score is his usual stuff. Editing is done well in parts but the length of the movie needs serious look in to with 2 hours and 45 mins. Production values, looks, making and costumes are a good plus.

To sum it up, 'ABCD' does not touch your soul but just takes on things superficially. It seems to be heading in that direction but takes the easier route instead. Hence, by the end, you may remember only the laughs, John and Kora. But one has to appreciate the intention behind the movie. In the times when the younger generation movies are travelling each year from extra marital affairs to adult themes to drugs, 'ABCD' tries to create more socially relevant entertainment. In that sense, it needs a pat on the back. If you are ready and have the patience for a lengthy movie, then 'ABCD' deservers a look.

    Verdict - Above Average
    Rating - 3/5
