Kunchacko Boban on his comeback to Mollywood.
Comeback kid:Kunchacko Boban.
Over a decade after his sensational debut in Fazil's Aniyathipravu,' Kunchacko Boban is back in the limelight with Gulumaal,' which did rather well at the box office. After such movies as Niram,' Swapnakoodu' and Kasthuriman' anointed him as the quintessential chocolate boy of Malayalam cinema, Kunchacko took a long break from acting.
In Gulumaal-The Escape,' directed by V.K. Prakash, Kunchacko and Jayasurya play two conmen trying to make a fast buck.
Chocolate hero
It was quite nice to be accepted as a chocolate hero but at the same time I felt it limited my capabilities as an actor. I did try and add more variety to that image, but was largely unsuccessful on that aspect, says Kunchacko.
When he felt that his career was drifting away, Kunchacko decided to turn his attention to business for a while. Once I decided to start acting again, the dance sequence in Twenty 20' and the small role in Lollypop' helped me condition myself for bigger roles. By the time, Gulumaal' started, my mindset was just right, adds Kunchacko.
Though I may not be a bad actor, I am not that much of a natural actor either. In Gulumaal' the situations were well created and I didn't have to try too hard to make it stick, he says.
Is he planning an image makeover in future films? I would like to play more meaningful characters that suit my looks, nature and mannerisms. I do not mind doing roles of different shades but whatever role I do, it has to look convincing when I play the character. I know my limitations as an actor better than anybody else. I am happy about the films I am doing now and next on the list is Mummy and Me,' directed by Jithu Joseph, explains the actor.
Kunchacko was the initial choice to play the character that was eventually enacted by Narain in Classmates.' He still regrets not having taken up that role. But on a personal note, I became closer to director Lal Jose after that, he admits.
Kunchacko had plans to produce a few movies, but for now that has been put on hold to concentrate on his second innings as an actor.
