Former Gunners captain says move to the Emirates Stadium may be behind lack of recent success and is happy to see Arsene Wenger's side qualify for the Champions League group stage

Cesc Fabregas believes Arsenal’s move away from Highbury to the Emirates Stadium is one of the reasons for their recent lack of success.

The Spaniard, who completed a €40 million (£35m) move to Barcelona earlier this month after eight years with the Gunners, feels the old ground had a special quality to it.

He told reporters: "I have never felt at home as I was at Highbury at any other stadium in the world but it was not my decision, it was the club's decision, it was what they needed in that moment.

"Highbury was a special thing that I don't think will happen anymore, but Arsenal have to make the Emirates their own home now and with their own cabinet of trophies to start all over again."

The midfielder admitted he was happy to watch the Gunners progress to the Champions League group stages after a difficult week for the side, but did reveal he was concerned when Udinese got a goal back and a penalty.

"I watched it and became a bit scared when they scored and got the penalty," said the Spain international.

"But I think after we saved the penalty the game became more comfortable for us and I think we played very well.

"I'm very happy for Arsenal and their fans because they deserve to be in the Champions League.

"It's a big boost for the club and the players, because it is a very difficult season and I am sure from this they will get so much confidence they can move forward."

There will be no possibility of an early reunion for Fabregas and Arsenal, with his Barcelona side also in Pot 1 of the group stage draw.

Arsenal board give total backing to Arsène Wenger and insist his position at the club is 'rock solid'

Arsène Wenger has received a resounding vote of confidence from the Arsenal board of directors, despite the embarrassing 8-2 defeat against Manchester United on Sunday

A senior club source told that Wenger’s position was “rock solid” and that Arsenal remain convinced that they have the right manager and long-term strategy.

Crucially, this position is endorsed by Arsenal’s owner Stan Kroenke, who watched Sunday’s match on television, but firmly believes that Wenger is one of the outstanding coaches in world sport.

Kroenke has maintained a low public profile since completing his majority takeover of Arsenal in June but is in regular contact with Wenger and chief executive Ivan Gazidis.

He generally travels to London for the club’s monthly board meetings and has made visits to speak with Wenger at Arsenal’s London Colney training ground.

Club sources say that he is fully engaged in key decisions and supportive of both Wenger and Gazidis as they try to steer the club through the most challenging period in their recent history.

“Arsène has the absolute backing and solidarity of the board,” said the club source. “His position is rock solid. Arsène is a manager with a great record and the club expect to be working with him for years to come.”

Wenger has apologised for Sunday’s humiliating defeat, while Arsenal yesterday took the unprecedented step of offering a free ticket for a future away game to those 3,000 fans who travelled to Old Trafford.

The gesture will cost the club around £130,000. “Our travelling fans were magnificent throughout and we want to recognise their fantastic support,” said a club statement.

The manner of the defeat was genuinely shocking. Lee Dixon, a member of the double-winning defence under Wenger in 1998, accused Arsenal of travelling to Manchester United with “no game plan whatsoever”.

Robin van Persie, the Arsenal captain, bluntly accepted that the team had got what they deserved. “It is an honest result if you look at the game,” he said. “We were simply not good enough. We have to deal with that. I don’t think we can hide behind injuries or suspensions. It is no excuse. They had injuries too.”

Although Kroenke was not at Old Trafford on Sunday, senior club officials, including Gazidis, director Richard Carr, secretary David Miles and director Ken Friar were.

While deeply disappointed, the collective feeling from the Arsenal board is that there were extraordinary circumstances. The team had been badly hit by injuries, suspensions and departures, while the gruelling Champions League qualifier against Udinese last Wednesday — played in sweltering temperatures — also seemed to take its toll.

Even so, a run of just two wins in the Premier League since March suggests more deep-rooted problems and has placed Wenger’s position under more scrutiny than at any time during his 15-year reign.

Of particular concern to fans is the club’s transfer strategy. Wenger has sanctioned the departures of five senior first-team players so far this summer, including Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas, without recruiting any proven Premier League experience.

With the transfer window closing tomorrow at 11pm, the Arsenal board has made it clear that the club’s entire transfer budget — understood to be around £70 million — is available for Wenger to invest how he chooses. “He does have money to spend but Arsène is the judge of the quality and price,” said the club source. “He will only buy players if he thinks they are right for the club.”

Yet even before the season started, 69 per cent of respondents in a survey for the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust said that Wenger’s philosophy took too much precedence over the objective of winning trophies.

“If Arsène Wenger wants to stay, the message from our members is that he has to change,” said Tim Payton, spokesman for the AST. “If he does not make some major signings in the next 48 hours he is in difficulty. They want players who are proven in the Premier League, players who can drag results over the line. There is also widespread support for a defensive coach to be brought in to work with the squad.”

The AST survey also recorded that 69 per cent of the respondents supported the involvement in some capacity of David Dein, the former vice-chairman who worked closely with Wenger on player recruitment.

Arsenal begin rebuilding process with signing of Brazil left-back Andre Santos

Arsenal agreed a £6.2 million fee last night with Fenerbahce for the Brazil left-back Andre Santos and have also made an enquiry for Chelsea midfielder Yossi Benayoun

With the transfer window closing tomorrow at 11pm, Arsene Wenger has begun taking decisive steps to try and strengthen a squad that was horribly exposed during Sunday’s 8-2 defeat against Manchester United.

A £4 million deal for South Korea striker Park Chu-Young – who is due to return to home to complete his national service in three years’ time – is likely to be announced today. It is understood that the initial fee for Chu-Young is as little as £2.5 million but could rise significantly according to add-ons, one of which is dependent on Park being excused his national service.

Arsenal are also poised to announce the signing of Santos, with Wenger having yesterday sanctioned the departure of Armond Traore to Queens Park Rangers .

Traore endured a particularly torrid afternoon during the Manchester United defeat and, while Kieran Gibbs is expected back from injury after the international break, Wenger has decided that he wants more experience in the left-back position.

Santos, 28, has the reputation as an attacking full-back and has made 22 senior appearances for the Brazil national team. He has the experience of playing in the Champions League and has been part of trophy-winning teams for both club and country.

As well as Santos and Chu-Young, Wenger also wants to add another defender and midfielder before tomorrow night. The interest in Benayoun is a slight surprise but, following the departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, he has been identified as a player who could offer both creativity and Premier League experience.

Benayoun indicated on his Twitter site that he is likely to leave Chelsea recently and gave up his number 10 shirt to new arrival Juan Mata. Liverpool and Lille are also monitoring the situation.

Wenger is also keen to reinforce in more central midfield areas. Of his initial targets, Marseille’s Lucho Gonzalez and Lille’s Eden Hazard now look almost certain to stay in France.

Everton have little interest in any swap deal involving Mikel Arteta for Nicklas Bendtner, while Rennes are holding out for around €30 million (£26.5 million) for Yann M’Vila.

Arsenal do, however, retain an interest in France midfielder Marvin Martin, who would be available at around £12 million. The situation regarding defenders is also complicated.

Arsenal have already had bids rejected for Bolton’s Gary Cahill and Everton centre-back Phil Jagielka, while an enquiry has also been made to Chelsea over the availability of Alex.

That has not been followed up with a firm offer and there is an increasing sense that Cahill or Jagielka remain the most likely targets.

It is thought that Arsenal are prepared to go up to £12 million for Cahill, with the possibility of a further £3 million depending on appearances.

Cahill’s contract expires next season and so Bolton would risk losing him for nothing next year if they do not sell during this transfer window.

The well-documented financial restrictions at Everton could also make it difficult to refuse a significantly improved offer for Jagielka.

    Gunners check on Vargas

Arsenal make enquiry for Fiorentina ace

Arsenal have made an enquiry for Fiorentina star Juan Manuel Vargas.

The 27-year-old Peruvian is very highly-rated and was looked at earlier in the summer by Manchester City, Tottenham and Liverpool.

The left-sider, who can play in defence or in midfield, is now on The Gunners' radar and they have made an enquiry with the Florence giants about his availability.

Fiorentina want to keep him, but a bid of in excess of £12million could be enough to convince them to sell.

With just over 24 hours of the transfer window remaining, Arsenal are now considering whether to push ahead with a deal.
