▣ Sify Review : Salt n' Pepper review: Taste this!
Please keep this in mind while going for director Aashiq Abu’s Salt n’ Pepper. .. ‘Don’t watch this film with an empty stomach’.
There is every chance that you will feel hungry even as you are inside the theatre, as this story is being narrated with food as the backdrop.
The story begins with yummy frames which shows delicious dishes which are well known in Kerala. From sadya, payasam, dosa, biryani, sweets to almost every food item that you can think about is shown right from the title slides.
Well, it’s a welcome change from the routine patterns which are religiously followed in Malayalam.
But the problem is that though the film attracts you like a whiff of fresh air at certain moments, it loses the direction during the rest of the time. The script (by Shyam Pushkaran and Dileesh Nair) could certainly have been crispier and that is exactly the weak link here as well. Even then the film is a nice effort, which needs to be appreciated.
Kalidasan (Lal) is a chronic bachelor working in the state Archaeological department and is a foodie. His only companion is his cook cum confidant Babu (Baburaj). Manu Raghav (Asif Ali) is Kalidasan’s nephew and he comes to his uncle’s place, while searching for a job.
Kalidasan’s boring life gets an altogether different twist with a wrong call from Maya (Swetha Menon), a spinster who is a dubbing artiste, living as a paying guest with her friend Meenakshi (Mythili). It all starts when Maya dials for a dosa and gets Kalidasan on line, instead of the food joint.
With brilliant visuals by Shyju Khaled and fantastic music by Biji Bal, Salt n’ Pepper is a brave experiment made stylishly and with lots of honesty.
Watch out for the superb scene where Kalidasan meets Babu, which is amazingly hilarious. The film has its moments, but certain scenes are far from convincing. Like the mooppan who is there in the story without much of relevance.
Among the actors, Lal makes it a joyous ride, ably supported by Swetha Menon, Asif Ali and Mythili. But the real surprise is Baburaj, who takes a break from his baddie roles and comes up with some genuine situations with his good performance.
Salt n’ Pepper may have its own share of shortcomings, but the sincerity with which it has been made is there to be seen in the film.
It’s a young film which oozes lots of freshness and it is enjoyable for people of all ages, especially if you love your food.

Aashiq Abu and his team adhere to the golden rules of good cooking, and see to it that the griddle is all hot, before they gently spread out a light hearted Dosa story on it. Go for it, folks. Slurp!

It has been about a day since my taste buds fell in love with Aasihiq Abu's Salt 'n Pepper and they are yet to get over it. You would see what I'm talking about, when I tell you that I drove around a drowsy city after a late night show, frantically hoping all the while to hit a food joint somewhere, where I could settle down in some corner, and eat, eat and just eat.
Kalidasan (Lal) is an archaeologist who is equally obsessed with food, and the smell and feel of the past. Maya (Swetha Menon) lives in another corner of the town, and has to put up with a job as a dubbing artiste that she enjoys, but which is often contrary to her beliefs. The two strike up a conversation that doesn't go too well, after one of Maya's calls to the local Dosa guy ends up on Kalidasan's mobile. Hate slowly gives way to affection, but when they decide to finally meet however, Kalidasan on the spur of the moment sends over his nephew Manu (Asif Ali) instead. And, Meenakshi (Mythili), Maya's roommate, volunteers to make an appearance on her behalf.
This is perhaps the first film that I have seen, where an entire audience smacks their lips in anticipation, barely two minutes into it. This is a dream-come-true film for any foodie out there, but even for the others there is no escape from the drool and dribble. Get ready for some real flooding in your mouths, as almost everyone in the film digs into food, and more food.
Having struck up an affinity over the telephone, Kalidasan proceeds to let Maya into the secrets of baking a Joan's Rainbow Cake. Made by a French soldier's wife as the Second World War raged on, and as she anxiously waited for her husband's return home, the sumptuous cake with strawberry, pistachio and orange layers placed one over the other, is topped all over with delicious chocolate sauce. Kalidasan and Maya bake their own versions, and the world around them turns a tad sweeter.
Kalidasan almost undergoes a teleportation, courtesy the Unniappam that proclaims Babu's (Baburaj) culinary skills. Almost everyone at the beauty parlor that Maya's house owner (Kalpana) runs, bites into her juicy banana fries with a vengeance. Manu stares at Meenakshi round eyed, with the froth of a hot cappuccino plastered over his upper lip. Balakrishnan (Vijayaraghavan), an officer at an excavation site, explains the impact of a steaming hot tea, after a terribly drunken night. And even the lecherous technician who's after Maya at work, chews into a drumstick in his Sambar as if there is no tomorrow.
As much as the film is about food that comes in all possible delectable forms, it's about several other things as well. It's about the lives of people who love to bite into something scrumptious and lose themselves in the glory of the moment. It's about people unearthing themselves, and on their route to discovery coming to finally comprehend, what they really want from life.
There is so much to be said, of each of these adorable characters. Maya is a struggler striving to confront her own insecurities, and constantly challenging herself to prove that better days lie ahead. She gets the jitters on a driving test, and eventually does grab the driver's license. She takes one hard look at herself in the mirror, and tries to come to terms with the fact that men aren't in love with her any more. And it doesn't help much, that they are lusting after her instead.
Kalidasan has been busy gorging on anything that he could lay his eyes on, and all on a sudden finds that the ground has turned slippery, as he starts yearning for companionship. He is a Self-doubting Thomas all right, and the salt on his beard isn't reassuring to him either. There isn't a flavor that escapes his savory tongue, and yet the tang end essence of human relations remain almost alien to him. Until he meets Maya.
I especially loved the wholehearted, keen servitude that characterizes Babu. Over the years, he has comfortably imposed wifely duties on himself, and is every bit what his employer wants him to be. Moopan (Kelu Moopan) is a silent spectator from another culture, who merely has a toothless grin as an answer to most questions. And who would forget K T Mirash (Ahmed Siddique), the irksome, on-your-back guy who eats into your ears with undecipherable, nonsensical advice, as much as you are trying to vigorously shake him off. Last but certainly not the least, there is the dysfunctional radio in Kalidasan's retro Premier Padmini, that jumps into life each time the car runs into a ditch. It soon dies out again, but not before playing a song that adds a little bit to the story.
Performances are uniformly splendid, and Lal and Swetha Menon head the lot, with feats that are crisp and quite crunchy. Asif Ali and Mythili whip up some real fresh cream with thick sugar syrup. Baburaj has some real spicy fries in store, that are downright yummy. Ahmed Siddique pours over some steaming soup that's sweet and sour. And the rest of them see to it that the garnishing is perfect.
Shyju Khalid, with his apron right on spot, has captured perfect frames that make Salt 'n Pepper, a visual delicacy. Saajan wastes no time, mincing it all up and slices and chops with precision. There is no one perhaps better than Sameera Sanish who knows what the right blend of colors can do on the dinner table. Bijibal and the rock band Avial have mixed up mint and cinnamon with their musical scores, and the very special 'Kanamullal Ulneerum' pours honey over raisins.
Aashiq Abu and his team (that includes the fantastic writers Syam Pushkaran and Dileesh Nair) adhere to the golden rules of good cooking, and see to it that the griddle is all hot, before they gently spread out a light hearted Dosa story on it. The batter is rich and consistently textured with much mirth and laughter and it settles down on the tava, with a sizzling hum. They grease it a bit further with a dollop of emotional butter that melts all over it in no time. Just as the crust turns firm, they flip it over, and let it turn a golden brown on both sides. And once done, roll it over to a swank platter, and serve it piping hot.
Go for it, folks. Slurp!

▣ Rediff Review : Review: Good sprinkling of Salt N' Pepper
Director Aashiq Abu (of Daddy Cool fame) has put together the right ingredients in his new film Salt N' Pepper and come up with quite an interesting dish.
This is a love story of two people facing a mid-life crisis, who find a release for their frustrations in cooking.
Kalidasan (Lal), is an unkempt archaeologist who likes old things: he uses a car that went of fashion in the mid-eighties and is allergic to modern amenities like cell phones. When he does get round to using one, it turns out to be a call meant for a dosa joint with home delivery facility.
At the other end is Maya (Shwetha Menon), who has remained a spinster because her stars were not propitious for marriage. She is a dubbing artiste. Her job is as thankless and frustrating as her single status.
As expected, the initial conversations between these two unusual characters create negative vibes and are peppered with choice abuses, but a long-distance romance develops because they have a similar interest -- cooking and food.
The plot develops naturally as their conversations help to etch their characters. They both get the jitters before their first personal meeting and become conscious of their physical appearances. So, they send younger and better looking substitutes for the meeting in the form of Manu (Asif), Kalidasan's nephew and Meenakshi (Mythili), Maya's roommate. This creates misunderstandings, confusion and conflict which of course is resolved at the end.
The actors have a whale of a time here. The role of Kalidasan suits Lal's restless personality to the hilt and he plays the role very convincingly.
This is a rare occasion for Shwetha to prove that her acting ability matches her appearance and there is no need to show off her assets. She plays a bespectacled woman on the wrong side of 30, so she needs more acting talent than good looks.
The younger actors Asif and Mythili play relatively simpler characters. Asif's exuberance is heart-warming and Mythili redeems herself after her previous dud Kana Kompathu, and gives a good performance.
The surprise package is Baburaj as the roly-poly cook who provides the required humourous touch and does it well.
All in all Aashiq Abu has come out with a movie that will be to the taste of all sections of the audience.

▣Indiaglitz Review : Salt 'N' Pepper - is exceptional
Director Aashiq Abu would have realised from his debut film 'Daddy Cool' that the recipe for a winning motion picture is neither a oversize financial plan, arresting locales and a massive star cast. This time with his new 'Salt N Pepper', he has gone for a low cost film that reiterates and restates the fact that content always reigns supreme.
A movie that definitely would fulfil you appetite for fresher themes and executions, the movie have shaped into loafs of superior tastes with the captain of the shop proving that he is a competent storyteller. A movie that makes you smile sporadically, the scripts by Shyam Pushkaran and Dileesh Nair isn't garnished with that much of unpredictability, but the way it is treated is better than its culmination. From the selection of a theme with food as it's backdrop, to the sequencing of events and assorted characters played by a bunch of gifted actors who do the right trick, the director is in complete control of a movie that may start a trend, in its own terms. At the same time, though the film has the exact running time, it could've done with some sharper editing at places.
The movie has Lal as Kalidasan, a chronic bachelor working in the state Archaeological department. With an only companion in Babu, his cook and housekeeper, Kalidasan is more obsessed with tastes than anything else. Manu Raghav played by Asif Ali is Kalidasan's nephew who arrives into his house in search of a job.
In another corner of the city is a spinster Maya (Shwetha Menon), who had towering aspirations but is currently leading a life as a high profile dubbing artist for movies. She lives a customary, non happening life with her friend Meenakshy (Mythili) as a paying guest in a house which also shelters a beauty parlour( run by kalpana). The movie takes a different turn as kalidasan gets a phone from Maya, thinking that to be a number a food hub. Maya asks for a Thattilkutty Dosa' and the fun begins.
The movie made in a stylish manner has plenty of quality humour that is well integrated into the sequence. The emotional moments and satirical gags are aplenty with many scenes living in our memory. Sure, the pace drops in the second hour, but the proceedings has the power to keep you glued to the seats till the finale in 'Aanakallan' song.
Lal as Lalidasan is the star of the show. He once again proves himself to be a fine actor, and plays his part without overdoing it one bit. Aashiq Abu is sure, not to have find an easy replacement for him, as he does every nuances of the character to perfection. Shwetha is once again in a superb role in which she displays anguish and sorrow with amazing maturity, though her dubbing artist in a couple of scenes fails her from a perfect portrayal. Asif Ali scores with his perfect timing while Mydhili appears right for her role. Baburaj, in a surprisingly simplistic role as Babu is a complete departure from his violence-laden roles
In the technical front, everything is perfect with Shyju Khalid coming up with excellent visuals and V Saajan with effective cuts. The songs by Biji Bal offers pleasant hearing with 'Premikkumbol' sure to emerge as an all- time favourite.
On the whole, 'Salt N Pepper' is a pure and tasty film that should instantaneously strike a chord with the youth mainly. A metro-centric film, 'Salt N Pepper' should attract its target audience, as its distributors have very rightly released the film at select centres of metros and mini-metros, instead of flooding the market with wide release. Mollywood cine lovers, in all probabilities will give this one with genuine and honest efforts, a chance to mature as a welcome hit.
