Kamal- KS Ravikumar has given superhits in the past with Avvai Shanmughi, Thenali, Panchathanthiram & Dasavatharam and Manmadhan Ambu is their 5th venture together. The hype & pre- publicity was comparatively lesser till the audio was launched in a grand manner at Singapore. But did it meet the expectations?? Read more..
Plot:
Madhan(Madhavan) is in love with actress Ambu (Thrisha), but Madhan doubts her too much and compels Ambu to quit acting in films. Ambu makes a deal with Madhan to wait if they want to live together and the break up temporarily. Madhan appoints Major Mannar(Kamal Hasan) as a spy to follow Ambu. The fun-ride starts here.
My opinion:
Even though first half was not that hilarious as expected, it was engaging and screenplay had a good flow. Post-interval, the momentum picked up but everything went haphazard in the final half hour filled with slapstick comedies and confusing situations. Climax was a total mess and ended up no where and it seemed everything got finished in a hurry.
Performances:
Kamal did not have anything extra-ordinary to perform, his role was something similar in Mumbai Express, Kathala Kathala except for some emotional scenes in first half where he did well. It was Madhavan who was the show stealer and he was absolutely brilliant especially in drunkard scenes. Like the lead hero, the lead heroine Trisha was good but it was Sangeetha who outperformed her. Urvashi, Ramesh Aravind, Kunjan, Manju Pillai were fine in their supporting roles.
Other aspects:
With Kamal Hasan penning the script, the story was simple & honest but KS Ravikumar's Direction could not add the right amount of fuel to pump up to expected level especially the final portions went totally out of control. Devi Sree Prasad's music was catchy and the placement of songs were perfect. Cinematography was another positive and picturization of Neela Vaanam song in reverse flashback mode was classic.
Overall, Manmadhan Ambu does not meet anywhere near to expectations, but it's definitely not a bad outing and I would rate it as a strict one-time watchable affair if you go with minimum expectation level.
Verdict: An average time-pass flick
