if you have net connection configured, use Ubuntu's repositories to install Google earth or any other applications. in Linux, repositories carry most softwares needed. so no need to manually install.
regarding google earth, if you have a 64-bit ubuntu, it will be tough to install manually. because, 32-bit libraries are needed.
