Default Dhobi Ghat Review - Interesting, but not a gripping film

    Dhobi Ghat - Mumbai Diaries

Starring: Aamir (Arun the Artist), Prateik Babbar(Munna the dhobi), Monica Dogra (Investment banker Shai), Kriti Malhotra(Yasmin the newly married girl)
    Language: Hindi/English
When: First Day, First Show (Jan 21 Friday, 10.30 AM)
    Where: Inox, Garuda Mall, Bangalore

Dhobi Ghat basically revolves around Mumbai and its underbellies. It talks about the aspirations of people from different parts of India
and how they all co-exist in Mumbai's chaos.

    Characters

There are four major characters whose lives are interlinked.

Washerman Munna: A Bihari by origin. He is good looking, aspires to become a model, mainly works As a Dhobi in the famous Dhobhi Ghat

Artist Arun: A divorcee, who is in his world of art. Introvert by nature and being slowly earning his fame as an artist

Shia: Investment banker from America on a sabbatical. She tries to capture Mumbai in her video camera.

Yasmin: A newly married woman, moved to city of dreams, her emotions are captured in cassettes as message to her bhayya

    Plot

Shia just arrived in Mumbai and gets hooked up with Arun(Amir) during an exhibition. After the sex, Amir gets guilty and it sort of ends there for him. For Shia, she still have some feeling towards Arun and finds it interesting to observe him.

Munna (Prateik) works as a Dhobi for both Arun and Shia. Shia and Munna likes each others company and Shia explores the city with the help of him, Munna as any normal guy would, falls for her though he doesnt know whether Shia treats him as a friend or anything more.

Movie flows along with few lighter moments Munna and Shia share exploring the city and how Munna is impacted by the death of his only friend (by the underworld).

Aamir finds a home in old Mumbai overlooking the busy lower middle class Mumbai households. He comes to know about Yasmin and how she was fascinated by the city and later suicides in the same home where Aamir stays through the cassettes which were left at his new home.

Dhobi Ghat doesn't go by usual route and a predefined climax and instead leaves it to viewer's imagination.

    Performance

Kiran Rao - as the writer/director, she was able to portray Mumbai well, but couldnt really connect to the viewers on what she is trying to convey

Aamir - Didnt look the character he played. Not a great role for him.

Prateik Babbar: He was excellent and charming, funny and worried youth. He should be the next big thing in Bollywood

Monica Dogra : Very pretty and lovable and a good actress too.

    Opinion:

As a movie Dhobi Ghat is nice to watch how Mumbai life unfolds on the celluloid. Things gets little boring at times except for the performance of the lead pair.
Good attempt but could have been made more interesting if it had a compelling story to tell.
