Gambhir¡¯s rise as a cricketer is most unusual -he was first noticed in T20 cricket, then proved himself in the ODI arena and finally scored big runs in Test cricket. Typically, cricketers who play all three formats of the game take the Tests to limited overs route. Although he first played Test cricket for India in 2004, Gambhir only became a regular in the Indian squad after the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup where he emerged as the highest run scorer for India with an aggregate of 227 runs. He then earned the title of highest run-scorer (440 runs) in India¡¯s triumphant 2008 CB series campaign in Australia. Finally, by virtueof scoring over 1200 runs (which included six centuries and two double centuries) in eight Test matches against Australia, England and New Zealand between October 2008 and April 2009, Gambhir becameVirender Sehwag¡¯s regularopening partner in Test cricket as well. His performance in Test cricketfor the 2008-09 season also earned him the ICC Test Player of the Year Award. Gambhir possesses an all-round game as a batsman. He can grind his way through a difficult passage of play and can also dictate terms to opposition bowlers if the situation demands. He is a terrific player of spin bowling, with the inside-outshot over cover against off-spinners turning out tobe his signature stroke. In MS Dhoni¡¯s absence, he captained India against New Zealand in the 2010 ODI series. He earned the Man-of-the-Series award while leading the Indian side to a 5-0 win. Commanding a record price of USD 2.4 million at the IPL Player Auction 2011, this Daredevil turned Knight Rider has a lot to live up toin the coming seasons of IPL.

In Yusuf Pathan India have a batsman who can change the course of a one-day orT20 game in a couple of overs. Yusuf, the older sibling of Irfan Pathan, firstserved notice to the Indiancricketing fraternity when he replaced an injured Virender Sehwag in the playing eleven against Pakistan at the 2007 T20 ICC World Cup final. Opening the innings with Gautam Gambhir, he set thetone for India in that match scoring 15 off 12 deliveries, including a big six off Mohammed Asif off just the fourth ball of the match. Pathan Sr. was also a vital cog in Rajasthan Royals’ IPL-winning seasonin 2008. Putting in a power-packed effort for the Royals, he scored 435 runs with four fifties at a strike-rate of 179 in the course of that inaugural season. A couple of ordinary performances took him out of the reckoning for India’s ODI squad. But playing in the 2010 Duleep Trophy final, Pathan engineered a record run chase for West Zone as he blitzed his way to a 190-ball unbeaten double century. He produced a similar effort ina 2010 ODI match, when an unbeaten 96-ball 123 helped India chase down 316 against New Zealand. As a result of these blustery knocks, Pathan fetched an incredible USD 2.1 million at the IPL Player Auction 2011 as also a place in India’s ODI World Cup squad.
