Farhan Akhtar's the Rockstar of Bollywood

While Ranbir Kapoor has been boasting of his 'Rockstar' tag all this while - with his guitar, beard, out-of-bed hairdo, zoOm recently rediscovered Bollywood's original 'rock' movie star: Farhan Akhtar.

In a public poll carried out in the UK, FA won the title of 'Rockstar of Bollywood', defeating RK.

He had originally brought the trend to Bollywood with his ultra-stylish Rock On!! and is apparently planning a sequel to it. He muses, "It's difficult to say no to sequels these days but nothing is on the cards as yet. Though the cast and crew is excited about the idea." We even heard that Farhan was now beefing up and growing a beard, but this stylish look isn't for the rock movie sequel... It's for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Well, what can we say? He's a style icon alright! And don't you worry, Ranbir... you've already 'rocked' the box office enough to make your mark!

Farhan thrilled with early response to Shahrukh & 'Don 2'

Shahrukh Khan's friends and associates are standing by him even as he awaits the global release of one of the most crucial films of his career, 'Don 2'. While Karan Johar is proclaiming that the film would be a neat thriller to watch out for, Farhan Akhtar believes that the film as well as his leading hero are garnering great positive vibes even as the film has already been released in the U.K.

"I know, it sounds quite weird for me to talk about my own work but from whatever I have heard from people who have seen the film, there are some very positive all around reactions that are visible", says Farhan whose last directorial outing was 'Don - The Chase Begins Again' ,"Even if I have to step aside from the film and forget that I have directed the film while commenting in as unbiased way as possible, I can say that there is a lot of positive energy involving Shahrukh and people are really loving him as the character of Don."

Here is hoping that reactions are just the same or even better when the film hits the screen tomorrow.

Akhtar far from Don in Bollywood

The awaited Bolly festive season highlight, Shahrukh Khan’s Don 2, opens this weekend. Tonight caught up withKing Khan’s leading lady, Priyanka Chopra, to find out more about what the audience can expect…

How does your role in Don 2 differ to your role in Don 1?

Don 2 is a cool role for me. It’s an action film on another level in Bollywood. I am angrier in this one. I’ve done a lot of fist-fighting (scenes) that I didn’t do too much of in the earlier Don. I went through intense rehearsals for my action stunts with guidance from Farhan (Akthar) and Shahrukh, who often pulled my leg. I don’t play a damsel in distress so I missed all the dancing and frolics I’ve done in my other movies.

Don 2 is one of those rare movies where I have to be serious all the time. I can’t even sport my foot-long smile. But that’s what is good about Don 2. It makes me do things I’ve never done.

What is your relationship with Don like?

Don cannot be predictable. By that, I mean Don as a person. You can never tell what his next move is going to be. He is one bad guy you can’t mess with. Don is cold-blooded and such people are really dangerous to deal with. Roma has such a relationship with him, hot and cold, as she is hell-bent on taking her revenge and wants Don at any cost. It’s a cat-and-mouse chase.


What is Don 2’s selling point?

Don 2 has redefined “slick” in Bollywood. It’s suspense on another level, too. The music is also rich, but the film is so huge in itself that the music will stand out once it is released. You will get the groove of the songs once you see the film. Don 2 is Farhan’s best work.

What sets Shahrukh apart from any other star?

Shahrukh can live up to anything. He is a man who believes in challenges. He puts in more work into his films than one needs to. There are very few actors like that. Don 2 is Shahrukh’s best action movie of the year, I feel.

Farhan Akhtar has achieved several accolades in his young career which saw him start off as director of the smash hit Dil Chahta Hai.

A decade later Akhtar has entrenched himself in Bollywood through his directing, producing, singing and acting skills.

In his latest movie, Akhtar returns as director to the Indian movie icon Don, for a sequel that is set to release tomorrow.

Tonight gets up-close with Akhtar to learn more about his first 3D movie adventure…

You’re moving quickly from one film to another. A few months back you gave us Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and now it’s Don 2. Does this quick succession put you under pressure while you try to maintain a certain standard in your productions?

In terms of our standards we try our best to ensure each product receives the deserved attention. So we planned well ahead for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Don 2 not to affect the eventual value of either.

My sister Zoya had taken care of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and I have done the same for Don 2.

How different is this sequel from the first film and how was your first 3D experience?

Don 2 continues from where the first part ended so this can be treated as a follow-up.

Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Boman Irani reprise their roles as Don, Roma and Vardhan respectively, plus there are some additions in the cast, including Lara Dutta, Kunal Kapoor and Sahil Shroff.

In terms of the 3D, it has been such a wonderful experience converting the film. I have seen portions of it and am so amazed with the way it has turned out.

Can you tell us about the look and styling of Shahrukh Khan’s Don character?

We have taken some of the essence of what Shahrukh did in the first Don. But we’ve also given him some new things to do with some new appearances.

The prison scenes demand a more rebellious looking Shahrukh – long, untamed hair, some stubble and a few tattoos.

Then there is a smooth and stylishly dressed Shahrukh, the way everybody loves him.

Why have you never shown any interest in acting in one of your directorial ventures?

Well, I have vowed never to act in any movie I am directing. Just because I want to be able to concentrate entirely on the production and take on the full responsibility of directing the project rather than dividing my attention in front of the camera too.

It’s highly evident that you are passionate about the music in your films. How much creativity comes from you as the director?

Shankar Ehsaan Loy are brilliant composers who are able to relate through their music exactly what the director requires for a particular scene. They’ve done exactly that with the music for Don 2.

BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG commences shoot on March 9


The Farhan Akhtar starrer biopic BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG is all set to go on floors on March 9. Prasoon Joshi and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra have been working on the script for almost a year.by the audience.
The film will start its shooting in Firozpur in Punjab after the auspicious occasion of Holi.
Rakeysh and his team have been searching for a perfect location to start shooting and after visiting almost all towns in Punjab they have shortlisted Firozpur. Firozpur has the perfect typography and colours that the art direction team was looking into.
