Dolby Atmos to revolutionise home theatres
Dolby Atmos is the new sound revolution in cinemas, it has given an added boost to sound quality. Today a lot of Bollywood and south Indian films are being made with Atmos mix. And nearly 52 screens in India are equipped with Dolby Atmos, out of which 33 are in southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
One of the highlights of last week’s big release, Pa.Ranjith’s critically acclaimed Karthi hit Madras, is its Atmos mix. The audience’s atleast in Chennai prefer to watch it in Atmos enabled screens, which make Santosh Narayanan’s background score sound so real.
Last week Dolby unveiled their Dolby Atmos home theatre receivers in India market. A sneek preview was held for the media at Dolby’s posh new office in Mumbai. Dolby Atmos, the powerful cinematic audio format Dolby calls “all-around sound,” has been stunning audiences in theatres. It will make its home theatre debut with the release of Transformers: Age of Extinction on Blu-ray on September 30.
Mahesh Sundaram, Regional Vice President, APAC, and Dolby Laboratories said: “At Dolby, we are committed to offer the best entertainment technologies to content creators and consumers. Dolby Atmos has proven to be a great enabler for giving audiences one of the most enhanced and realistic entertainment experience. We are now taking the ‘Atmos experience’ to the next level with the introduction of ‘Dolby Atmos at Home’. It transports you from an ordinary moment into an extraordinary.”
With the increase in content such as Blu-rays with Dolby Atmos support, the adoption of Dolby Atmos at home would increase gradually. The release of Transformers: Age of Extinction will be the first of a slew of new Dolby Atmos-ready Blu-ray discs and soon all Indian films mixed in Atmos will also be available in this format.
Several companies such as Onkyo, Yamaha and more have already started selling the Dolby Atmos receivers. The pricing of an Atmos AV receiver in India starts from Rs 50,000 to 1.5 lakhs. Hopefully in a few months’ time we would be able to experience and enjoy in our home theatre a Bang Bang, Madras or a Yaan in Dolby Atmos.
