    Sanju Samson gets India call-up

Kerala wicketkeeper batsman Sanju Samson and Railways leg-spinner Karn Sharma have earned a maiden India call up after being selected to the Indian team for the five ODIs and a solitary Twenty20 International against England. Mumbai paceman Dhawal Kulkarni has also been included in the 17-member squad.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Gautam Gambhir, who are part of the ongoing five-match Test series team, were omitted along with Yuvraj Singh as selectors gave first indication of their 2015 World Cup plans. In-form Karnataka opener Robin Uthappa also missed the flight to England for the series starting August 25 and concluding on September 7.

The selection panel headed by Sandeep Patil held discussions with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and coach Duncan Fletcher through video conference before finalising the squad and have rewarded fringe players. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma are set to keep their opening slots with vice-captain Virat Kohli to form the crux of the batting.

Samson has been consistent with the Rajasthan Royals and was the highest run-getter for India A with 244 runs at an average of 81.33 in seven matches on the recent Australia sojourn. Samson’s promise at the young age of 19, seems to have gone in his favour at the expense of in-form wicketkeeper batsman Naman Ojha who was recently included in the Test squad for his outstanding performances in Australia.

The 26-year-old Karn who was also in Australia with the A team has been a consistent performer in the IPL and domestic matches and got the nod ahead of the young spin duo of Akshar Patel and Parvez Rasool.

Karn’s teammate in Sunrisers Hyderabad Amit Mishra also a leg-spinner was ruled out due to a back injury. Pacer Ishant Sharma is also recuperating from an injury.

Kulkarni emerged the highest wicket-taker (14 scalps) for India A in the just concluded quadrangular A-Team ODI tournament in Australia which the Indians won. Kulkarni was picked in the ODI squad for the home series against West Indies last year but was then ruled out with injury.

Ambati Rayudu and Stuart Binny who were part of the ODI squad to Bangladesh for three ODIs that comprised mostly the domestic and IPL performers have retained their place along with relatively experienced players Suresh Raina and Ajinkya Rahane. Pujara and Uthappa failed to impress selectors who also ignored inform Maharashtra batsman Kedar Jadhav and Bengal’s mainstay Manoj Tiwary.

Umesh Yadav, one of the stars of the first-class matches on the A tour, retained his place along with Mohit Sharma. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami and Kulkarni are the other pacers in the squad.

“Considering the World Cup, the emphasis was laid on including the young players, that is why players such as Sanju Samson, Karn Sharma, Mohit Sharma and Stuart Binny are there in the team,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel told reporters here.

How Kerala boy Sanju Samson made it to Team India

When the news of his entry into the Indian cricket team reached 19-year-old Sanju Viswanathan Samson, he was attending his usual training session in the Thiruvanthapuram Medical College ground.

When he returned to his residence Liji Hut in Mulloorkonam, a coastal fisherman village near Vizhinjam at 8 pm on Tuesday, he was welcomed by villagers and TV channel crews outside his house.

Sanju will be fighting England in the five-match ODI series and one-off Twenty 20 against England. The first match of the series begins in Bristol on August 25.

When the news of his inclusion in the team came as TV on 7 pm, Sanju returned home in a car to seek blessings of his family and friends.

Sanju said the news was confirmed by a friend on the way back. His father Viswanath Samson, a former policeman in Delhi Police, was excited.

His mother, Liji Samson, said she was blessed to have a son like Sanju.

"I am extremely happy to find place in the team. But I don't expect anything from the game. All I wish is to play well to bring fame to the Indian team. The selection to the Indian team increases my responsibility," said Sanju Samson to reporters.
Sanju studied in Delhi till Class 7 since his father was in Delhi Police.

In fact, it was Viswanath Samson, a football coach who inspired Sanju to take up cricket.

Though his father tried to get his son a place in cricket camps run by former cricketers, he failed to convince them about his son's talents.

He later quit his job and returned to Kerala.

Sanju later found a way to his guru and former Ranji coach Biju Varghese.

"I inquired about the details of the cricket coaching to Sandeep Raveendran, a boy I met on the road with cricket kit while on his way to training. I was introduced to the camp run by Biju through former BCCI statistician Sudheer Ali," Sanju said about his beginning in an earlier interview.

He was selected to the under-13 Kerala cricket team in 2007. He showed calibre as a batsman in the first match by hitting a century.

His talent was at its peak when he scored a double century in the first match in under-16 Kerala team. He was selected to Kerala Ranji team in 2011 where he scored another century in the first match against Vidharbha.

Sanju was picked up by Rajastan Royals IPL team in 2013. He scored 339 runs in the IPL.

His performance in the ODI against India will decide whether he would find place in the Indian team in the World Cup to be played in Australia and New Zealand.

Sanju and his family went to the churches in and around Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday to pray.

"I will be there at the Medical College grounds in Thiruvanthapuram on Wednesday too for training," said Sanju before leaving the residence.

It is the ground that turned the destiny of an ordinary coastal village boy to that of an Indian cricket team member.
