Matt Damon is back as production begins on the new Bourne movie!
Production is now underway on the new Bourne movie! This, the still-untitled fifth entry in the action franchise, will feature the return of Academy Award-winning actor Matt Damon to the title role with The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum helmer Paul Greengrass back in the director’s chair. Producer Frank Marshall just tweeted the very first image from the shoot and, as you can see in full below, it features a shirtless Matt Damon, apparently gearing up for some kind of fight.
Little is known about the plot of the new film, although it has been confirmed that it will not feature a crossover between Damon’s Bourne and Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross. Julia Stiles will be reprising her franchise role, however, with Ex Machina and The Man From U.N.C.L.E.‘s Alicia Vikander also set to star alongside franchise newcomers Tommy Lee Jones and Vincent Cassell. Although unconfirmed at this time, Jones is rumored to be playing a high-ranking CIA official with Cassell starring as the film’s chief antagonist, an assassin on Jason Bourne’s tail.
“Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world,” Damon recently told BuzzFeed about the sequel. “It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.”
Frank Marshall is producing the new Bourne movie alongside Jeffrey Weiner for Captivate Entertainment. Greengrass, Damon and Greg Goodman also attached to produce.
The new Bourne movie is slated to hit the big screen July 29, 2016.

Tommy Lee Jones has joined the cast of the upcoming fifth Bourne film.
Tommy Lee Jones will join fellow Academy Award winner Matt Damon for the next Jason Bourne film
Cameras are just about ready to roll on the new, currently-untitled Jason Bourne film that will feature the return of Academy Award-winning actor Matt Damon to the title role with The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum helmer Paul Greengrass back in the director’s chair. Today, Variety brings word that Damon will have a fellow Academy Award winner starring opposite him as Tommy Lee Jones has just signed on for a role.
Little is known about the plot of the new film, although it has been confirmed that it will not feature a crossover between Damon’s Bourne and Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross. Julia Stiles will be reprising her franchise role, however, with Ex Machina and The Man From U.N.C.L.E.‘s Alicia Vikander also set to star.
Jones recently co-wrote, directed and starred in The Homesman, based on the Glendon Swarthout novel. He’ll next star in the sci-fi tinged action thriller Criminal, starring opposite Gary Oldman, Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Costner, Alice Eve and Gal Gadot. Although his Bourne 5 role has not yet been revealed, the trade suggests that he’ll be playing a high-ranking CIA officer.
