Malayali youngster makes it big in Finland cricket


Tirur: Here’s the inspiring story of Malappuram native Faheem Nellancheri, a member of the Finland national cricket team. The youngster is known for his powerful shots and his unwavering sportsmanship.

Faheem got the opportunity to play against teams including Norway, Denmark and Sweden in the Nordic Cup. Finland managed to emerge victorious against Sweden as well. Faheem made his presence felt in the European cricket championship held in Spain. In the tournament, Finland played against Turkey, Ireland, Hungary and Austria.

He has been living in Finland for the last six years. He runs a logistics company franchise in the country. He joined the Greater Helsinki Cricket Club in 2018 and scored 1,502 runs in 94 T20 matches. He was selected for the Finland national team in 2022. So far, he has played in five international T20s and scored 59 runs.

Gautam Gambhir unveiled as India's new head coach



The new coach will be in charge for three and a half years and in all formats

Gautam Gambhir will be India's next head coach, succeeding Rahul Dravid, who ended his tenure after overseeing India's victorious T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. BCCI secretary Jay Shah made the announcement via X (formerly Twitter).
Gambhir's first assignment in charge will be a white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, comprising three ODIs and three T20Is, later this month.
"India is my identity and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life," he said on X. "I'm honoured to be back, albeit wearing a different hat. But my goal is the same as it has always been, to make every Indian proud. The men in blue shoulder the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians and I will do everything in my power to make these dreams come true!"
In its official press release confirming Gambhir's appointment, the BCCI indicated that the tenures of the assistant coaches who had worked with Dravid - Vikram Rathour (batting), Paras Mhambrey (bowling) and T Dilip (fielding) - had come to an end. "The BCCI values their contribution and wishes them the best going forward," the release said.

The 42-year-old Gambhir takes over a team riding a wave of immense success. They reached the finals of both the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup last year before becoming T20 World Champions, and they are on course to reach their third successive WTC final next year. The team, however, is in the middle of a transition away from one of its most glittering eras. He takes over the T20I side following the retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja from that format. A number of other stars in their mid-to-late 30s, including R Ashwin and Mohammed Shami, could be nearing the end of their careers in other formats too.

The BCCI had earlier said the new head coach would be appointed from July for a term of three-and-a-half years until December 2027 and would be in charge of the team across all three formats.
While the BCCI had advertised for candidates for the role and set a deadline for applications as May 27, the board had held discussions with Gambhir during IPL 2024, where he was Kolkata Knight Riders' mentor during their run to the title.

Before joining KKR in November 2023, Gambhir had been mentor at Lucknow Super Giants during IPL 2022 and 2023, helping them qualify for the playoffs in both seasons. These are the only coaching roles he has had since the end of his playing career. During his India career, Gambhir played crucial roles in winning the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup, top-scoring for India in the finals of both tournaments. He also captained KKR to two IPL titles, in 2012 and 2014.

He had requested for time to make a decision during IPL 2024, but once the season was over he expressed his desire to coach India at an event in Abu Dhabi on June 1.
"Look, I would love to coach the Indian team," Gambhir said, when asked by a youngster whether he would help India win the World Cup. "There is no bigger honour. There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians. And more across the globe as well. And when you represent India, how can it get bigger than that?


"How can I help India win the World Cup - I think it's not me that will help India win the World Cup, it is 140 crore Indians that will help India win the World Cup. If everyone starts praying for us, and we start playing and representing them, India will win the World Cup. The most important thing is to be fearless and yes, I would love to coach India."
Gambhir became the frontrunner to succeed Dravid especially after his former India team-mate VVS Laxman told BCCI he was not interested in the job. Laxman is currently the director of cricket at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, and is coaching India on an interim basis during their ongoing five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe.
Dravid took over from Ravi Shastri after the T20 World Cup in November 2021 for two years until the 2023 ODI World Cup. He then agreed to the BCCI's request to extend his tenure until the end of the T20 World Cup 2024, and helped India lift their first ICC trophy since 2013.

Kerala to Launch Its Own Six-Team T20 Cricket League in September


The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) announced that it will launch a franchise-model cricket league similar to the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Twenty20 format competition is set to begin in September. Six teams will compete in the state premier league, adhering to the rules and regulations of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The event will commence as soon as the Twenty20 cricket league in neighboring Karnataka concludes. “We will call for expression of interest from franchisees next week. A base price of Rs 1 crore has been fixed for the franchisees to participate in the bidding process,” KCA President Jayesh K. George said. The matches will be broadcast on Star Sports 2, including its HD format, and digital streaming of the matches is also being planned.

The state league will span 19 days, including two reserve days, with six teams playing a total of 33 matches. The matches will take place at The Sports Hub in Kariavattom, which has hosted many international cricket matches. According to KCA officials, the matches are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.Only players registered in Kerala will be eligible to play in the league.

‘How can you ban it?’ One of world’s oldest cricket clubs slammed over ‘ridiculous’ move

One of the world’s oldest cricket clubs has been criticised by players after banning them from hitting sixes following complaints of damage from neighbours.
A batter for Southwick and Shoreham cricket club, located close to Brighton in West Sussex, described the move as “ridiculous” while the team’s treasurer said it was a “proactive decision” that had to be made.
It came after the club’s neighbours voiced their anger over damage to cars, windows and sheds, with players told they can now no longer play the sport’s top-scoring shot.


That did not go down well with one batter, who told The Daily Mail the move “removes the joy” of playing cricket.
“Hitting the bowler for a six out is part of the glory of the sport. How can you ban it? It’s ridiculous,” he said.

“To take that away removes the joy of it. I don’t agree that the rules should be tinkered with in this fashion.”
Another said the owners should have considered the possibility of having property damaged by flying cricket balls when they purchased homes close to the ground.
“Everything is about health and safety these days and insurance companies are charging a fortune to indemnify sports clubs against accidental damage or injury to bystanders,” they said.

“If you buy a house next to a cricket ground then you’ve got to expect a few cricket balls in your garden.”
Well, 80-year-old Mary Gill, whose family has lived next to the ground for generations, said the ban is a “good thing”.
“It’s a very small ground and can’t accommodate the testosterone-fuelled young men who come along and just want to hit the ball as far as they can,” she told the Mail.
“My parents and grandparents lived in this house before me and cricket balls were always sailing over and causing damage. Over the years we’ve had tiles smashed off the roof, windows broken and all sorts.”

Not everyone agreed, with retired cab driver Peter Naghten questioning whether it is the right move and just how realistic it is to expect players not to hit the shot.

“I’ve never had a ball in my property but I don’t really agree with banning sixes – it’s one of the most interesting things about the sport,” he said.
“I can understand why the ground is not really appropriate because it’s so small but how do you stop a batsman hitting a six? Surely it is in their blood and when the ball presents itself, you’d just give it an almighty hit.”
William Escott described the ban as “preposterous” but Mark Broxup, treasurer of the club, provided some explanation as to why he supported it.
“We took the proactive decision to ban sixes at the ground after a few incidents in the past when cars, houses and even roofs were damaged,” he said.
“We don’t want to have to pay costly insurance or have any legal claims against us so it seemed a sensible thing to do.”
