The story of a man who goes in search of a better life for his family, sacrificing the many things he love. Set in a period when Keralites had to endure all sorts of hardships even to reach their land of hope, Pathemari starts well enough. The journey is shot well, the vfx actually good, and we can feel the hardships that they faced. However, from there the movie falls for me. It is a typical "family" movie, where one brother toils for the rest of the family with a horde of relatives waiting to exploit him. We have come across this in so many movies, perfectly executed by Mammootty himself in the evergreen "Valsalyam". Just the setting was different for me, from toiling on the field to the hardships in a concrete jungle.
The way the film portrays the prevations of NRIs also didn't connect with me, restricting it to showing the confined places they live in and some dialogues trying (and failing) to create some nostalgia.
Thankfully songs are well placed and weaved into the narrative seamlessly. There are some moments and some dialogues that worked well. But the basic premise was something repetitive, didn't click for me.
Performances:
Ikka obviously was good. But for me Varsham still ranks as the best performance in recent times from the Big Ms.
Jewel Mary absolute crap.
The guy who played their elder son was good. After the movie @aqildiego told me he is Siddique's son. Pedigree.
Infact most of them were good and did their jobs well.
Rating: Average for me. 2.5/5. Just didnot connect with me. Strictly my opinion. Bouquets and brickbats welcome.
