Kumbalangi Nights -Review

Kumbalanghi Nights is one of those cinema that has more to it than meet the eyes. It might look way too casual and random but it is not.
The film is placed in a dysfunctional family of four brothers residing by the backwaters of Kochi in the tiny island of Kumbalanghi.The pattern is more or less similar to what we have seen the previous endeavors of the writer like Mahesh. They are driven by few fantabulous characters, the incidents that occur in their lives and the lifestyle of the place where the story is set. They wouldn't have a strong plot line per say but keep you marveled with its strong screenplay.

Syam Pushkaran's writing is flawless and it has this understated style of straight face humour that makes the proceedings so endearing to watch. Add Shyju Khalid's splendid cinematography and music by Sushin that supplements the film in its totality.

The first half of the film look scattered though entertaining. It might come across as a dearranged pack of cards but in the latter half everything get coordinated and aligns perfectly packing the right emotional punch and ends with a much needed grip in the climax.

The film has way too many moments that hold on to you even after it is over. Certain scenes like the one where soubin and shane retrace their past and family chronicle is pure gem and place it much above a quintessential feel good cinema.
Performances for obvious reasons tower over everything else. Soubin tahir is what you call bloody awesomeness. Shane,fahad,new girl(had criticized her for her average looks in poster. Erase it. She has terrific screen presence and is a natural on screen) and rest of the cast are expectedly superb. The beauty of Syam's writing is such that even brief characters like Fahad's wife, heroine's mother, tamilian laundry guy and practically everyone cast a impression.

Finally the director Madhu who makes his debut is yet another welcome addition to the list of talented directors though inspiration from Pothen /Abu school of making is quite evident. He has absolute command over the craft and has done a fantastic job.

Yes.... Adhikavum co writing aaya kondu oru clarity kuravu undayirunu....how far is his involvement or what exactly is his craft ennu okke..... Ethu kandapo manasilayi... Mahesh ayalum Mayanadhi ayalum...they were largely his work... Dialogues... Humor... Ethu okke kaanumpo... you get a sense of it
