Fisherman's Review of The Priest
Theatre: EKM Shenoys Luxe Screen
Date: Mar 12
Time: 6:30pm
Status: HF.
Could not watch yesterday due to some other commitments. Expectation was set for an excellent first half and above average second half based on the different reviews seen and opinions heard. Chose the Luxe Screen since that is the Atmos screen in Shenoys.
As mentioned in the reviews first half is excellent with a knee jerking twist. Well written, well made, crisp with an intelligent interval punch. First half focusses on a series of suicides within a family and uncovers the mystery behind the same. Through this story the film establish the background and character of The priest. By Interval the mystery unfolds and the interval punch closes the last episode of that mystery and reveals more on the character of The Priest.
From then on the movie ventures into its actual theme. You will enjoy second half if you are a fan of exorcism movies. Second half might not meet the expectation you set yourself with the interval punch. It takes a different turn and focusses on the exorcism and family relationships associated with the victims. The family emotions have really worked out well in this half. The exorcism seens will remind you of similar scenes in several Hollywood movies, but they have executed it well. It is very easy to get things out of hand in these exorcism sequences. But they have executed it real well. Unlike the other exorcism movies we have seen in Malayalam, this movie does not keep the victim under suspense. The victim is made clear by the interval itself and the rest of the movie deals with how the victim is treated and the answers to why. The answer to Why also does not have any major twist or turns or very cruel villains as you might expect. That might be why the climax feels pretty plain for some people. The tail end is also very good.
Positives
Direction - Kudos to Joffin for managing such a complex theme so well.
Script
BGM Score
Performance by all star cast and notably the kid. Manju's character is short and sweet. Nikhila has done her role very well. Coming to Mam - Nothing extra ordinary for him to perform.
Negatives
Second half could have been made little more short and crisp
Climax could have had some twist which could have satisfied all
Overall Summary - A well made horror thriller with all the technical finesse. Should watch in a good theatre and enjoy the theatrical experience of this well made movie.
Theatre Review - Shenoys Luxe Screen is just awesome. I have been to other Atmos and 4k Screens, but the sound and picture quality is just awesome in this screen. Even in other screens without Atmos, the sound quality is just awesome. There is something extra these guys have done.
Rating - 4/5
