LaLiga signs broadcasting deal in India with Viacom 18 for three years
- The 3-year exclusive partnership will give the network linear and digital rights across the Indian subcontinent.
LaLiga has signed a broadcast deal with Viacom18s flagship youth brand MTV teamed for the next 3 years. Enabled and supported by Rise Worldwide, LaLiga football tournament will now air exclusively on MTV in India, along with select national and regional network channels and live-streamed on Voot & Jio platforms.
Consumption and following of football in India have consistently increased over the past decade, especially amongst the youth.
Viacom Network18 (read AMBANI) wants to launch couple of Sports channels.
They wanted some property to start and thus bough La Liga rights.
Of course, Messi out of La Liga will affect the viewership.
Even with Messi there, there were no takers for the league rights last year.
La Liga was an unsold property, so the amount could be less.
The group already has EFL rights (EPL Premiership and EFL cup) rights.
They won't be much worried.
As per rumours, TV18 wants to bid for IPL rights next year with STAR deal ending with this IPL.
So, they want to enter the Sports channel business first with something.
As per reports, two CINEPLEX channels will be converted to Sports channels, most likely Sports18 and Sports18 HD.
Atletico Madrid beat Celta Vigo in LaLiga opener as both sides see red in late brawl
Atletico Madrid began their LaLiga title defence with a 2-1 win away to Celta Vigo on Sunday thanks to two strikes from Argentine forward Angel Correa although the game ended with a mass brawl and a player from each side was sent off.
Luis Suarez began the game on the bench and Correa took full responsibility for the team's attacking duties, firing Atletico ahead midway through the first half after a marauding run from Thomas Lemar.
Celta levelled in the 59th minute with a penalty from captain Iago Aspas but Atletico soon restored their lead when Correa arrowed into the bottom corner after a superb diagonal ball from Saul Niguez , who had been expected to leave the club during the close season.
The game ended in chaos as Celta captain Hugo Mallo and Atletico defender Mario Hermoso were shown red cards in added time for clashing off the ball while players all over the pitch could be seen confronting each other in the melee.
Atletico were fortunate not to concede an equaliser when Aspas rounded keeper Jan Oblak but the striker somehow missed the target with the goal gaping.
The champions were forced to defend deep in their own half until the 10th minute of added time.
Suarez , who struck 21 goals to help Atletico to a first title since 2014, came off the bench to replace Correa midway through the second half while Argentine midfielder Rodrigo de Paul also came on to make his debut following a 35-million ($41-million) move from Udinese.
