Everton deducted 10 points from English Premier League season

Everton is one of England's most storied football clubs.
English Premier League side Everton have been deducted 10 points from this season after breaching the league's Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs).

    Key points:

    • Everton were given a points deduction for breaching the league's financial rules
    • The deduction means Everton are now 19th, in the relegation zone after 12 matches
    • Everton narrowly avoided relegation at the end of last season

An independent panel found during the three-year financial period ending at the end of the 2021/22 season, the club had lost 124.5 million British pounds.
The PSRs are "designed to ensure that clubs are financially responsible and do not spend beyond their means", by submitting their accounts for the previous two years, with the estimated profit or loss of the current year.

This is done on March 1 by all clubs, and financial losses can incur penalties.
Points deductions come into effect if a club is found to have losses exceeding 105 million British pounds in a given time frame.
An independent commission found Everton had exceeded that limit, with the points deduction taking immediate effect.
"The Premier League issued a complaint against the Club and referred the case to an independent Commission earlier this year," a Premier League statement read.
"During the proceedings, the Club admitted it was in breach of the PSRs for the period ending Season 2021/22 but the extent of the breach remained in dispute.
"Following a five-day hearing last month, the Commission determined that Everton FC's PSR Calculation for the relevant period resulted in a loss of 124.5million, as contended by the Premier League, which exceeded the threshold of 105million permitted under the PSRs."

After 12 matches of the current 38-match season, Everton had amassed 14 points, with four wins, two draws and six losses.
The deduction reduces them to 4 points for the campaign, moving them to 19th in the 20-team league.
The bottom three clubs at the end of each season are relegated to the Championship, the second division in the English football pyramid.
Everton, a storied club from Liverpool who
se most recent glory days came in the 1980s, narrowly avoided relegation last season, securing a win on the final day of the season to secure their place in the top flight.

Real Madrid thrash woeful Barca in Supercopa final

Sunday's Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona in the Spanish Supercopa final offered the potential for high drama, but Carlo Ancelotti's side romped to a 4-1 win over their rivals that will give Xavi & Co. even more headaches to contend with over the remainder of the season.

Vincius scored a first-half hat trick -- one of the fastest in the history of this rivalry -- as Barcelona struggled to cope with Real's pace, and even though Robert Lewandowski scored with a fine strike from the edge of the box to give Barca a chance, a late red card for Ronald Arajo compounded the Blaugrana's issues and ensured a tough trip back to Spain.

Lautaro Martinez's late strike hands Inter Milan 1-0 win over Napoli in Italian Super Cup final

Lautaro Martinez secured Inter Milan’s third successive Italian Super Cup by scoring the match-winning goal in a thrilling 1-0 victory over Napoli in Riyadh.

Inter Milan beat Napoli 1-0 in Super Cup final

Lautaro Martinez secured Inter Milan’s third successive Italian Super Cup by scoring the match-winning goal in a thrilling 1-0 victory over Napoli in Riyadh.
The Argentinean striker delivered the decisive strike in the dying seconds of added time, making full use of defender Benjamin Pavard’s well-placed low cross.
The 26-year-old's winning strike, his 21st goal this season in all fixtures, saw off Napoli, who were down to 10-men after the dismissal of striker Giovanni Simeone due to two yellow card offenses.

Martinez equalled former striker Christian Vieri’s record to becoming the ninth all-time top-scorer in the history of Inter Milan. Since his transfer in 2018, Martinex has netted 123 goals for ther Nerazzurri.

Speaking after the match, Martinez said he was proud and happy to have won the Super Cup after being eliminated from the Italian Cup. Bologna beat Inter Milan 2-1 to knock them out of the Italian Cup in December.
“I am very proud and happy. We were eliminated from the Italian Cup, so we wanted to win the Super Cup. It was tough, we had a day’s less rest, we were not sharp, but I am proud of this team. The goal was a great emotion, a unique moment,” said Martinez.
His goal provided Inter Milan’s head coach, Simone Inzaghi, with his fifth Super Cup title, a new record in his managerial career. Inzaghi's triumph this year marks the third consecutive Super Cup win, eclipsing the achievements of Italian managerial greats, Fabio Capello and Marcello Lippi.

Liverpool win Carabao Cup as Van Dijks extra-time header sinks Chelsea

When Liverpool won the corner towards the very end of extra time that would prove decisive, Jrgen Klopp applauded and just found himself smiling at the romance of it all. Depleted by a host of injuries and collecting more here, other *players running on fumes, the manager had introduced a clutch of untested youngsters. But here his team were, fighting until the last breath. It was Liverpool who found the purpose and clarity in the extra period.
Klopps scriptwriter had something left, the detail to ignite his quest to collect four more trophies before he rides off into the sunset at the end of the season. The substitute Kostas Tsimikas swung over the kick and there was Virgil van Dijk, *stealing away from Axel Disasi, to glance home with his head. The Liverpool captain had seen a header ruled out on the hour after a lengthy VAR intervention. There would be no denying him or his team on this occasion.

Klopps smile was something now and the celebrations would be *suitably wild upon the full-time whistle, his punches to the Liverpool supporters heavy on emotion. The photographers got the picture they wanted when Klopp and Van Dijk lifted the trophy together and there was a scene that quickly went viral when Klopp, every Liverpool player and every member of staff draped arms around each other and swayed in one line to the strains of Youll Never Walk Alone.
The other half of the stadium had long since emptied. It was Mauricio Pochettino who had the red eyes; he and Chelsea the bitter regrets. The Chelsea manager had watched his team recover from a nervous start and they had the chances to have won it in normal time. After Van Dijks *disallowed header, it was Chelsea who turned the screw.
Conor Gallagher did not deserve to be on the losing team but he was not clinical when he had to be. There would be no triumph to spark the Pochettino era and he is still seeking his first silverware in English *football. Nor was there a first return on the 1bn transfer spend of the clubs Todd Boehly-fronted ownership. The cold truth was that Chelsea disintegrated in extra time.

What now for them? Not since the Roman Abramovich takeover have they gone two consecutive seasons without a trophy but that will be their fate if they cannot win the FA Cup. One of the problems for them is that Liverpool are still in it.
It was a gripping occasion when the modern history between the clubs had bubbled all of those epic Champions League knockout ties in the mid-to-late noughties and the four previous finals. Also when the team news was massive, mainly from a Liverpool point of view.
Klopp had counted 11 absentees, including some big ones Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nez. He would lose Ryan Gravenberch midway through the first half of normal time after a bad tackle from Moiss Caicedo; the midfielder would reappear on crutches for the celebrations, his foot in a protective boot. Wataru Endo also departed Wembley on crutches and in a boot, having damaged an ankle.
It was an occasion coloured by the contributions of Liverpools academy players. Conor Bradley was fearless from the outset, first at right-back, then in midfield, and Klopp would finish with Bobby Clark and James McConnell in the No 8 positions and Jayden Danns as the No 9. *Jarell Quansah also came on in central defence.

Athletic Bilbao end a wait of 40 years to win Copa del Rey

Athletic Bilbao broke a 40-year spell by clinching the Copa del Rey title in a thrilling penalty shootout victory against Real Mallorca, following a tense 1-1 draw in extra time.
In a showdown at La Cartuja stadium in Seville, the Basque squad claimed their 24th trophy, trailing only behind Barcelona's 31 titles, by narrowly overcoming the underdog challenge from Mallorca.

The match saw Dani Rodriguez putting Mallorca in the lead in the first half, swiftly countered by Oihan Sancet's equalizer after the break, leading to a deadlock until the decisive penalty shootout.

Julen Agirrezabala, Athletic's goalkeeper, emerged as a hero by thwarting Manu Morlanes' penalty, while Nemanja Radonjic's miss from the spot further favored Athletic, who converted all four of their penalties to clinch victory.
Alex Berenguer sealed the triumph with a composed finish from the spot, igniting euphoric celebrations among the traveling Basque supporters.

For Ernesto Valverde's Athletic, who had previously faced six defeats in the final, this hard-earned victory marked the end of a series of near misses.
Having eliminated powerhouses like Barcelona and Atletico Madrid en route to the final, Los Leones secured their first major trophy since claiming a domestic league and cup double in 1984.
"This is incredible, we've made history," man-of-the-match Nico Williams told TVE. "The team worked hard, the fans are always with us and they deserve it, I've dreamed of this for a long time."

Athletic, whose players famously celebrated on a boat named the 'Gabarra' following their last victory, will have the opportunity to revive the tradition once more next week.
"I'm so excited (for that), I am so happy, this is the club of my life," added the Spanish winger, who taunted Mallorca with his dribbling all night.
Mallorca, champions in 2003, began the game with vigor, as target man Vedat Muriqi's long-range attempt was nervously tipped over by Agirrezabala.

Appearing in the final for the fourth time, the islanders seized the lead in the 21st minute courtesy of Rodriguez's expertly placed strike.
Despite Giovanni Gonzalez's blocked shot and Jose Copete's saved attempt, Rodriguez skillfully found the top corner, eluding Athletic's Dani Vivian stationed on the goal line.
While Los Leones struggled to create chances, the exceptional Nico Williams stood out, albeit his 39th-minute goal was ruled offside.

Yuri Berchiche made a crucial block to deny Copete as Mallorca eyed their second goal, while Nico Williams narrowly missed the target after a promising run into the box.
Agirrezabala denied Canadian international Cyle Larin early in the second half before Athletic leveled the score.
Once again, Nico Williams played a pivotal role, delivering a pass into the box for Sancet to confidently slot home past Mallorca goalkeeper Dominik Greif, much to the delight of Athletic's passionate traveling fans.
A superb run by Nico Williams nearly saw the Basques take the lead, but his cross narrowly eluded his brother Inaki Williams, with the latter unable to capitalize.

Greif parried away a powerful shot from Vivian late in the game, and Gorka Guruzeta's header missed narrowly, leaving the teams deadlocked at full time.
Nico Williams saw his close-range effort brilliantly deflected wide by Pablo Maffeo in the 111th minute of extra time.
On the other end, Agirrezabala was quick to deny Muriqi's header, with the Kosovo striker sporting a bandage after a clash of heads with Unai Gomez.
The subsequent penalty shootout brought further agony for Muriqi, who converted his spot-kick, but unfortunately for him, his teammates failed to follow suit.
"I'm emotional because I'm proud of my team-mates and of the fans who came here," Rodriguez told TVE. "It was a dream to lift this cup and we tried until the end."

Leverkusens previous best finish had been second place, something they had achieved five times in their history. Their quest to win a remarkable treble also remains alive. They take on Kaiserslautern in the domestic cup final and lead West Ham 2-0 in the Europa League quarter-final after the first leg on Thursday.
With 10 minutes to go, the long-suffering fans made their way to the sidelines and a few jumped the gun, storming the pitch with the full time whistle yet to be blown.
Leverkusen players ushered the fans back into their seats. Some obliged, albeit briefly, with the stands swiftly emptying on the 90-minute mark as tearful fans made their way onto the field to celebrate with the players.
Leverkusen are now on 79 points the best tally after 29 games in German league history and are 16 clear of second-placed Bayern and third-placed Stuttgart.
