Tamil Cinema in 2007 - Half Year Report

The attempts create great expectations but the percentage of disappointment is more. This could be a brief description of Tamil films in the first half of 2007. Seen from the profit angle, 2007 has seen more profit than other years. One could even say that Kollywood earnings have overtaken Bollywood earnings.

From January 1 to June 30, 50 films have been released. This is 8 films more than last year. It's good news that the percentage of successful films is also more.

The first blockbuster success of this year is 'Pokkiri.' The Tamil re-make of a Telugu film, it was neatly package din a commercial mix of foot tapping tunes, Asin's acting, Vijay's attraction, thrilling fights, a bit of comedy and a climax with a turning point. Made on a budget of 12 crores, the film is said to have grossed 35 crores.

Following 'Pokkiri,' the film that filled everyone's coffers was 'Thamirabarani.' The plus points of the film were Hari's story, Vishal's actions, and good character portrayals by Prabhu and Nadia.

In the 6 months, these two are the only successful films made on a usual cinema formula. The other successful films 'Pachaikili Muthucharam,' 'Chennai 600028,' 'Paruthiveeran,' 'Unnale Unnale,' 'Mozhi' and 'Naan Avanillai' are all very different from one another.

Sarath Kumar plays the novel role of a man who lusts not after his won wife, but after another man's wife. The same can be said for Jyotika's character. The story and the way it is narrated is new to Tamil cinema.

'Paruthiveeran' scores on realism. But the screenplay, scenes, songs and fights make the audience like a rowdy and this makes the film comparable to usual formula films.

'Mozhi' is about the love life of a musician. His girlfriend cannot hear music, but she does not consider that a drawback. She gets angry when people consider deaf and mute people as disadvantaged and shower sympathy on them. The director Radha Mohan has given a humorous twist to this very sensitive subject. He's a bright star in Tamil cinema.

The habit of remaking old Tamil films started with 'Naan Avanillai.' A suave hero who cheats 5 heroines amidst sensual songs created a sensation in B and C centres.

Last year, Karan was hero with 'Kokki' and he solidified his position this year with 'Karuppusamy Kuthagaikarar.' Sathyaraj turned producer with 'Lee' but his son failed to make impact as saleable hero. Amidst all this, a 9 year old made 'Sadhanai' and entered the Guinness Record.

Amidst a great deal of expectation, Cheran's 'Mayakannadi' bombed miserably. The lessons taught by 'Mayakannadi' and 'Ninaithu Ninaithu Parthein' are not to touch subjects with little knowledge and not to labour under the misguided notion that a good film necessarily has to preach.

'Periyar' was a much awaited film but Gnanarajasekaran's magic touch in 'Bharathi' was missing in 'Periyar.' Trying to show all world leaders in one film and the choice of actors were villains of the film.

After languishing for 12 years in the cans, RK Selvamani's 'Kutra Pathrikai' finally got released this year. If it had stayed in the cans, respect for Selvamani would have been in tact. The opposite can be said of 'Kuppi' dubbed from a Kannada film.

'Sivaji' got released on June 15. Since too much has been said about it for the past 2 years, we will move on to the next film.

The surprise hit of 2007 is 'Chennai 600028.' Some young boys play street cricket with a tennis ball. There's no usual formula of scenes for every character and a heroine for each guy. The film is interspersed with small stories, with an unexpected climax. One needs to have guts to come up with such a story for a Tamil film. That courageous person is director Venkat Prabhu and kudos to producer Saran for supporting him. These two get the award for Men of the Match for the first half of 2007. Radha Mohan and Prakashraj deserve special awards.

Since 'Bhima,' 'Kireetam' and 'Dasavataram' are to be released in the latter half of 2007, one can expect a lot more profits for Tamil cinema!
