SRK, Aamir in 'Dhoom 3'?

Yash Raj Films seem to have made up its mind. They will be making 'Dhoom 3'. Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra will continue to play the cops, as in 'Dhoom 2'.

Buzz is, Shah Rukh Khan has been roped in to play the smart thief (played by John Abraham in 'Dhoom' and Hrithik Roshan in 'Dhoom 2') There's also talk doing the rounds that Aamir Khan will be included in the film.

What about the girls? Rimi Sen and Esha Deol who were in 'Dhoom', were not chosen for 'Dhoom 2', but instead were replaced by Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu. Will Rimi and Esha return? Or will Ash and Bips continue? Or will we have some other gals? Let's wait and watch.

One thing is for certain. Sanjay Gadhvi who directed the first two parts will not be directing the third one. Gadhvi has since parted ways with Yash Raj Films.

Bollywood can survive beyond the Khans

After decades of domination by the three Khans (Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman), 2006 witnessed the establishment of a second generation of superstars who are set to takeover the baton. Hrithik Roshan has clearly emerged as the next big bet in Bollywood. With two blockbusters - "Krrish" and "Dhoom 2" - within one year under his belt, the light-eyed hunk is being compared to Hollywood sensations Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Hrithik's superhuman act in "Krrish" has been touted as better than Hollywood's super heroes.And in "Dhoom 2", he has given a blockbuster not produced by his father.


The film has also put the stamp of successive successes on Abhishek Bachchan, whose fortunes had turned for the better with "Bunty Aur Babli" and has been shinning since then.

Abhishek's upcoming single-hero project "Guru" is likely to consolidate his position as a performer-cum-star.


One look at the reining films on the marquees and it seems that John Abraham is set to occupy top rankings in the tally of leading Bollywood actors in the New Year.

Given that, he has no family ties with the industry, this is no easy feat.John is featuring in two films on the marquees at the moment and both are as different as chalk and cheese.


While one is "Baabul", a true-blue Bollywood multi-starrer about widow remarriage, the other is a rare travelogue into war-torn Afghanistan titled "Kabul Express".

John is comfortable rubbing shoulders with mega stars like Salman, Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji as well as talented character actors like Arshad Warsi and Nana Patekar.


Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman have also had their share of success this year. But the norm that films featuring the Khans will be the biggest grosser of the year has been broken. Box-office wise, Shah Rukh and Salman have not performed exceptionally this year. "Don - The Chase Begins" was Shah Rukh's calling card this year but it did not outshine all others.




Salman's "Jaan-e-mann" fell short of the competition. Although Salman's "Baabul" may still be a hit as it is a family oriented drama and such flicks usually take time to grow on audiences.

The actor has, however, lost some of his box office draw this year.



Aamir with his policy of one project at a time will continue to be a chief attraction in the year ahead but for film trade investors investing in him is no longer a guarantee to success. And now that Shah Rukh has signed on to do STAR's "Kaun Banega Crorepati", he will have less time for films. Thankfully for Bollywood, a new set of stars is waiting in the wings.

Setting 2006 apart from years before was the sheer multiplicity of films coming out of the Mumbai studio-based Hindi film industry.

The seeds were sown in 2005 when "Page 3" and "Black" did well around the country.


Mainstream filmmakers thought out of the box and reaped big dividends this year - from low-budget, theme-driven releases like "Dor", "Corporate" and "Khosla Ka Ghosla" to flashier yet 'experimental' star vehicles like "Rang De Basanti", "Lage Raho Munna Bhai" and "Omkara" to mainstream films with a twist like "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" and "Taxi No. 9211".

The industry is yet to get out of the mould of following the pack.

We continue to see that a successful film immediately inspires a set of replicas.

But all in all the year will be remembered as much for the money made as for the range and quality of the fare.

Some superstitions have also been dropped.

Now we have filmmakers releasing films almost throughout the year.

In fact, a series of released are slated for the year-end, a marked departure from previous years.


Trade observer Taran Adarsh says that this year's last Friday will witness the unveiling of as many as four medium-budget films: Arjun Rampal's first production "I See You", Amar Butala's chick-flick "Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamaana", Manish Jha's "Anwar" and Nazim Rizvi's "Undertrial", reportedly based on a true incident.

With Mani Ratnam's eagerly awaited "Guru" set for release in the last fortnight of 2006, it is pretty obvious that the happy trend has sustained itself for all of two years.

Krrish 3 to hit the screen in 2007

MUMBAI: After his successful Koi Mil Gaya and Krrish, Rakesh Roshan will be making a third part of his super-hero series with Hrithik in the second-half of 2007.

An ecstatic Hrithik says, "All I can say at this point is, I wish I could play the villain in Krrish 3. I'm really excited about the villain's role, so much so that I feel like giving up the super-hero's mantle to play the villain."

If he's so enthusiastic about it he could play both the super-hero and the villain in Krrish 3 ?

"No, no," shrugs Hrithik. "That would be a triple role, because I'll already be playing the father, son and the villain."

The dates for the third part of the adventures of Rohit/ Krissh are now being worked out.

Says Hrithik, "We intend to start shooting by the year-end. It all depends on Jodha-Akbar which I think will require two extra months of shooting, plus about 40 days of dubbing. In Dhoom 2 I didn't have that much to speak and I still took about 25 days to dub for it."

Best Of 2006 - Bollywood

Top Five films of the year.

This was the year of sequels for the industry. And then things went too far with DHOOM 2. But we do love Bollywood. Our writer went to his local multiplex every Friday, for the entire ’06, so that at the end of the year, he could write this feature. Yeah, we are still laughing at that!

2006 had been touted as the year, when every big banner and big star had a release. But surprisingly, when we sat down to pick the top 5 Hindi films of the year, foolishly expecting to be spoilt for choice, we found ourselves
struggling to fill the list without just to make up the numbers.

Anyway, here’s the list.

1. LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI
One of the very rare occassions when a sequel was actually better than the first film (given that the first film was a good effort, of course) LRM was good because it was unassuming,
unpretentious, laughed at itself, and didn’t try too hard to be funny. It told a story, and told it well. Gandhigiri is a hit, Vidhu Vinod Chopra is laughing all the way to the bank, Sanjay Dutt’s bail has run out. The last fact has got nothing to do with the movie, just mentioned it by way of general information.

2. RANG DE BASANTI
Losing the top-position to LRM with almost a fraction, RDB was the first major hit of the year, and did something that is a benchmark of truly remarkable success- became a cult. Partly because of great music, and the successful formula of administering a bitter pill sugar coated with youth, fun and good humour. Partly because it gave the sort of rebellious,
anti-establishment, politician bashing message that the masses always like to cheer, but seldom like to follow.

3. OMKARA
There is a fine line between a good film and a well-made film. OMKARA highlights that fine line because it is an extremely well-made film. Well shot, well framed, well edited, well, well everything (you might want to throw me into a well after this; certainly after this). Stark games of politics and power set in badlands, crude but hardhitting dialouges,some great characterization followed up by some very good acting and music and of course, some nice gaali-galoj. Bhen***d yeh to hit ho gaya!

4. DOR
Nagesh Kukunoor mein hai woh baat! Another well made, ’different’, touching film with fine acting performance. It stood out all the more because you got a lot more than you expected from the likes of Gul Panag and most notably, Ayesha Takia. Add to that some great music that fits fantastically well with the script, and you have a success.

5. WOH LAMHE
Maybe this is an indication of the struggle to fill up 5 spots that we mentioned earlier. But having said that, in a year of largely mediocre efforts, WOH LAMHE was definitely above average. Typically raw emotions, slight crudeness in execution that made it disarming, a reasonably touching
story all added to the effect. A tragic story well told by Mohit Suri, who is quickly becoming an understated but very effective director.
