Vijay (Tamil : விஜய் ) is a popular Tamil actor, born June 22, 1974. He is affectionately known as Ilaya Thalapathy (Tamil: ''இளைய தளபதி'') among his fans, which literally means Young General and is credited onscreen as such. He has appeared in a large number of movies and is as well an ambassador for various brands.


Personal

He is born to S.A. Chandrasekaran and Shoba, both well known in the film industry. He married Sangeetha in August of 1999. Vijay has two children, a son, Jason Sanjay, born in 2000, and a daughter, Divya Srisha, born in 2005. He has a bachelor's degree in Visual Communications from Loyola College, Chennai. Vijay had a sister, Vidya, but she passed away from leukaemia when Vijay was still young. His movie Thirupaachi was based on the loss of his sister, directed by Perarasu.


Career

When he was a child he acted in Vetri, Sattam oru irudarai. He made his debut as hero at the age of 18 in the film Naalaya Theerpu in 1992. His second movie, Senthoorapandi, released one year later. Later on, at the age of twenty, he had his first successful release, Rasigan. While he was filming Minsara Kanna in 1999, he married Sangeetha.

There is no aim as such for me. I came without any aims to the industry. I felt happy when people accepted me as an actor. Now people are comparing me with Rajini Sir. God has given me more than what I expected. So, I will work very hard to sustain that position


Vijay has become the commanding force of the Tamil industry with popularity and business support next only to the superstar Rajinikanth. But, the success and the adulation did not happen overnight. His journey has met with several obstacles and failures.


His determination and self-confidence have brought him the laurels. Vijay comes from a family which has strong experience in the film industry. Father, S. A. Chandrasekaran is a popular director and mother Shoba is an accomplished playback singer. Vijay has a soft corner for anyone who answers to the name Vidya for it is the name of his sister who died when she was just two. He made his debut as a child artiste in the film, Vetri. His first film as hero was Nalaiya theerpu. He has acted in 48 films so far. Films like Rasigan, Senthurappandi and Deva made him the badshah of B and C centres while Kadhalukku mariyadhai, Poove unakkaga, Once more, Gilli, etc. made his appeal sore among the urban audience.


He is the youngest actor to have won the MGR award from the Tamil Nadu Government and Kalaimamani title. His inspiration are MGR’s Nadodi mannan, Rajini’s Annamalai and Vijayakanth’s Sattam oru iruttarai and Vanathaippola.

Though films like Puli do happen, a film like Theri as a festival release is safe always. He stands tall with his consistency and proven market, over a space of 10 films or so.Going forward, I feel he can do experimental films on a lower salary. It would be even better, if it’s in his own banner. An extra brand value will also be there and the business will be different. Risks can also be mitigated.”
